DIY: Sock Bun / Donut Bun

Hair bun is one of the easiest styles. All you need is a band to hold your twisted/balled hair, then you are done! Though if you want to make it complicated, probably find it bit boring and mainstream. I'm going to show you how to nail it.

This is going to be short and easy. Wanna know the best thing about this? It's  free! No need to buy "donut bun maker" for about P50 (1$+) or even higher. Another thing you may like about this is that, you can choose its size. So let's begin.

DIY Sock Bun (Two Easy Steps)

You only need two pairs: scissors and socks

Longer and thicker socks would be great for bigger bun. You can use your dad's old socks. For the color, choose the closest to your current hair color. At least avoid white. I bet you wouldn't like your white socks to peek out while carrying the bun.

  • Cut the closed end part of the sock. Don't cut it way too long.

  •  Now you have two holes, simply fold or roll (it's up to you) one end towards the other. Don't be confused, it's just like the usual folding of socks. You may fold it according to your preferred height and thickness.

After folding it 'til the end, you'd get this doughnut-like form, you're done! Just make sure that the hole is big enough to place your ponytail later on.

You can also use old leggings to make a thicker bun. Again, you can fold or roll it up.

How to Make a Donut Bun Hairstyle

There are different ways on how to do this hairstyle. It depends on the hair length. This one is for the medium length.

What you'll need:
  • Sock bun
  • 2 Ponytails / bands
  • clips / bobby pins

We are going to start with a ponytail. Remember that high ponytail means high bun.

Then put the sock bun on your wrist/hand and place it in the ponytail.

Spread the tail/ hair until it covers the whole sock bun.

Insert a band. I used colored one to make it visible. You may use any color you want as it will be covered on the final step.

Tuck the band in. It would make the next and final step easier.

Just twist the remaining hair and roll it up around the bun. Put the bobby pins to keep it in place. As simple as that. Though you might find it hard at first. Perfect practice makes perfect!
